Altitude Preparation Notice
One of the important factors to consider when traveling in Peru is the elevation. Altitude is certainly something to be aware of, but from our experience, it was very manageable. While our itinerary does not include long, strenuous treks, we will be spending time in the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Cusco, all of which are located at elevations that can affect visitors who are not accustomed to high altitudes.
Approximate elevations of key destinations:
-
Sacred Valley: 9,000–10,000 feet (2,740–3,050 meters) above sea level, depending on the location
-
Machu Picchu: 7,970 feet (2,430 meters) above sea level
-
Cusco: 11,150 feet (3,400 meters) above sea level
The effects of altitude vary from person to person. Some travelers experience mild symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, dizziness, or difficulty sleeping, while others may notice only a reduced exercise capacity. Moderate activities such as walking uphill, climbing staircases, or navigating uneven terrain, can leave travelers feeling short of breath or fatigued.
To help ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience, we strongly encourage you to prepare in advance by maintaining a good level of physical fitness. Regular walking, cardiovascular exercise, and activities that build endurance can help make your trip more enjoyable.
Although the itinerary is designed for general travelers rather than trekkers, you should be comfortable walking for extended periods, climbing stairs, and managing moderate inclines and declines. The first full day of the trip will be focused around grounding and rest to adjust to the elevation. Additionally, our guides and the hotels where we stay typically have supplemental oxygen available as a precaution should anyone experience altitude-related discomfort.
We recommend arriving well rested, staying hydrated, and pacing yourself. There is a medication available that can be taken preventatively to help reduce symptoms of altitude sickness. We recommend consulting your doctor about this and/or if you have any other medical conditions that could be affected by altitude or physical exertion. Your doctor can advise you on any precautions you should take and whether medications or other measures may be appropriate.
We will be sending out more information to make sure everyone is well prepared, so you can make the most of your time exploring these remarkable destinations!
